Did you know?
The Saudi government has plans to invest a total of USD 4.7 billion in the country’s aquaculture value chain over the next few years with the ambition of increasing the Kingdom’s overall seafood production to 600,000 metric tons by 2030. The Saudi Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture announced an additional investment of USD 347 million in 2019 to ramp up the progress.
The government’s increased interest in the industry is now attracting significant private sector investments with several international players entering the market. The latest development in the aquaculture industry comes with the introduction of the Aqua Bridge project and the opening of its new hatchery.
The Aqua Bridge project will be focusing on the production of European sea bream and sea bass, and currently has a production capacity of 3 million juveniles annually with the eventual target of increasing the annual production capacity to over 10 million juveniles. Its new hatchery, set up at Al-Lith, has already produced and successfully delivered more than 5 million juveniles since its launch.
With the Kingdom inching closer to its targets every year, we can’t wait to see the rapid developments that the future holds for the aquaculture sector of Saudi Arabia.
