Spain has signed an order to purchase 25 Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets on November 5, 2024. The aircraft will replace the aging EF-18M Hornet fighter jets .
The plan to purchase the Typhoon was announced by the Spanish Ministry of Defense last year.
The Typhoons purchased are in the Tranche 4+ configuration. The Spanish Air and Space Force currently operates 17 Tranche 1 models, 32 Tranche 2 models, and 19 Tranche 3 models.
In 2026 Spain will also add another 20 Tranche 4 Typhoons, bringing the total number of aircraft ordered to 45, according to Janes.
In addition to purchasing the Typhoon , Spain is also in further discussions with Lockheed Martin of the United States for the acquisition of the F-35 Lightning II stealth fighter jet .
For Eurofighter, the sale of the Typhoon to Spain represents an expansion of the global market for this swingrole fighter jet .
Apart from Spain, Qatar is reportedly exploring the purchase of a second wave of 12 Typhoons .
Then Saudi Arabia is considering adding 54 units and Turkey is eyeing 40 units.
Opportunities also come from Poland which is considering ordering 32 of the delta-winged jets.
The Eurofighter consortium offers client countries the opportunity to participate in the manufacture of Typhoon components to strengthen the local defence industry.
The Eurofighter strategy also includes specialized versions, such as Germany’s recent order for the Typhoon EK electronic warfare aircraft, which combines the advanced Arexis EW system and anti-radar missiles to replace Germany’s Tornado ECR fleet .
