Welcome back to the Pippa Project. In the last episode we did a quick introduction to Pippa the S2000 powered Haynes Roadster and diagnosed an overheating problem and a blown head gasket. In part 2; I remove the cylinder had and do a cylinder head resurface. The cylinder had had warped due to the overheating. A warped cylinder head will not sit flat on the head gasket and will cause it to fail again due to uneven pressure distribution. The normal solution is to skim the cylinder head flat on a milling machine or special head skimming machine. Unfortunately my milling machine wasn't able to cut the head flat due to some wear in the ways. The bridgeport milling machine I have used to be owned by a pattern makers who work mainly in wood. This means the machine had never really been oiled and had suffered as a consequence. I ended up lapping the cylinder head back to flat instead. The flatness tolerance is 0.05mm over a 0.5m length head or 0.002" over about 20" So not a lot of room for error.
