Viktor Frankl writes: "Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom."
I never knew such a space existed until I started watching the mind at work and learning more about its process. I was sceptical at first, but over time--and with much practice--I began to find the little gaps between events and my reaction to them.
You remember what Epictetus said? We're not disturbed by things but by our opinion about things? When I stand in the space between stimulus and response, I can witness my opinions arising. And if I catch it in time, I can assess, dispute, and replace it with a better opinion.
This, I believe, is what Frankl meant when he said we can choose our response. In that tiny gap we have the ability to reprogram our automatic assessments of things and, as a result, amend our emotional reactions as well.
Have you ever found the space Frankl spoke of? Have you been able to squeeze yourself into those little gaps, and if so what was the result?
I wanna know, so do me a favour and tell me about your experiences
