Are there rules for long you wait for your partner to “put a ring on it” when you’re over 50?
The answer is unique to you and your situation, but experts generally recommend waiting at least a year—experience all four seasons as a couple.
In this video, Heidi offers some food for thought as you examine your personal situation.
Regardless of age, you could have myriad considerations to contemplate—are you happy with the status quo; dating? Perhaps you’ve been married; been there, done that, and you are seeking companionship. Alternatively, your personal beliefs and value system might dictate you engage in a marriage, not just a date.
The best advice is to seek professional advice, consult your accountant, financial planner, attorney, and anyone else who could lend a professional opinion on your individual circumstances, and learn what the legal, tax, etc., consequences could be from entering into a new marriage.
Also, talk to your family, friends, and your partner and make sure everyone is on the same page. You don’t want any unrealistic expectations floating around or set yourself or your partner up for disappointment. At 50, there could be adult children in the mix.
It’s time for some serious self-reflection on what you want from this relationship, and make sure your partner feels the same.
