Why should you care about the National Wildlife Refuge System?
Because it’s the only federal lands system dedicated to the protection of wildlife.
And overwhelming evidence demonstrates that we are losing the species around us at a rapid rate.
Defenders of Wildlife is committed to addressing the biodiversity and climate crises by defending, supporting, and expanding these conservation lands because
The System’s nearly 600 refuges are havens for vulnerable species and provide invaluable ecosystem services, such as clean water , and offer unrivaled recreation opportunities for all Americans.
Roughly a third of all federally imperiled species rely on these lands for shelter and safety from escalating threats, like climate change and development, that continue to drive habitat loss nationwide.
Protecting the Refuge System is is essential to ensuring the protection of nature, from the smallest butterflies to polar bears and everything in-between.
Defenders’ recognizes the need for conserving lands that provide adequate protections for species and habitats, equitable access to nature for all communities and refuge from escalating climate change.
Together, we can make a lasting difference for wildlife, their habitat, and future generations by protecting and enhancing the National Wildlife Refuge System.
