If you're shopping for a Solid State drive in 2015, there is one clear winner for price and performance. That is the Samsung 850 EVO series. Samsung is the clear market leader right now, and for good reason. With the new 3D-VNAND technology, Samsung has changed the game. It won't be long before all SSDs are 3D VNAND.
Samsung was smart enough to release the 850 EVO at the same MSRP as the 840 EVO, making the price difference under $50. This is going to drive sales of the 850 very high. If the price difference between the 2 were $75 or more, it may be a tough call, especially at the 500GB size. With the premium for the new 850 being so low, it is definitely worth buying the 850 EVO over the 840, and the rest of the mainstream competition as well. The Crucial mx100 and 500 don't match the performance and speed of the 850 EVO. Unless you are looking to spend another $0.25 or more per GB, or are building the computer for someone else and don't care, the 850 EVO is the only real choice. You are getting the best technology and performance for 2014 model pricing.
As Far as Size Goes. If Your budget supports it, get the 500GB version. If not, the 250GB Version is way ahead of the 840 EVO and other brands. At the 500GB level they all seem to plateau, but at 250GB and below the 850 EVO is actually the clear winner.
