"계란 한판에 9천500원... 고기보다 비싸" 상인, 소비자 모두 한숨
The price of eggs has risen between 50 and 100 percent in the past month at some stores due to a lack of supply.
The continued spread of avian influenza at poultry farms across the country has resulted in the culling of some 26 million chickens to stop the outbreaks.
According to the Korea Agro-Fisheries and Food Trade Corporation, which monitors food prices, a carton of 30 eggs was selling for 7-thousand-500 won... at a market in Gwangju, South Jeolla Province.
That's about 6 U.S. dollars and 20 cents, a rise of more than 56 percent from a month ago.
And the trade corporation says some supermarket are selling eggs for nearly double last month's price at 9-thousand-500 won.
To help alleviate the shortage, the government said last week that it'll lift import duties on eggs for six months starting in January.
