Since their discovery, antimicrobial medications (antibiotics, antivirals, etc.) have saved millions of lives around the world. But the growth of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which is the ability for microbes to resist the effects of antimicrobials, has become one of the world’s most urgent public health threats. Microbes are everywhere, most are harmless, but it is impossible for most of us to avoid getting sick from a harmful (pathogenic) microbe all our lives. Chances are you know someone whose life has been saved by antibiotics. Whether through contaminated food, an infected cut, or simply rubbing your eyes after touching a dirty surface, there are lots of opportunities for microbial infection every day. That's why we all rely on antimicrobials to make us feel better when we’re sick.
