ZTE Axon 30 is coming soon as the successor of last year's ZTE Axon 20 which had an under-display selfie camera. The ZTE Axon 30 is coming with an upgraded under-display camera tech.

Do you remember the last year’s ZTE Axon 20? Yes, that phone with an under-display selfie camera. While some brands had already showcased this tech, the Axon 20 launched as the world’s first smartphone available to buy with an under-display selfie camera technology. Now, since it was the first generation, the implementation was not at all perfect. You could see the distortion in the panel around the camera module, but the company is confident that it has improved that a lot in the successor. The ZTE Axon 30 is coming soon, maybe this month, and now, we have got a real-life image of the phone which shows off its front design & reveals the massive improvement over the last generation.

So while you could see the distortion around the camera in last year’s model, it seems like there is no such distortion in the case of ZTE Axon 30. The panel looks clean with no cutouts or notches & you cannot see what the selfie camera is located. In the last year’s model, what ZTE did was to lower the pixel density of the panel around the selfie camera to 200 PPI (vs. 400PPI of the rest of the panel) so that the light can pass through the panel and reach the sensor beneath it. But this time, instead of decreasing the pixel density, ZTE has kept pixel density the same as the rest of the panel, i.e., 400 PPI. This is perhaps the biggest reason why you are not able to see that pixelated square that was present in last year’s model.

Another display upgrade over the last year’s model is that this time, the refresh rate is 120Hz vs. 90Hz.

It is also reported that the phone is coming with 55W fast charging. The Axon 20 of last year was a mid-range device with the Snapdragon 765G SOC, so the ZTE Axon 30 is also expected to be a mid-range phone. Moreover, the ZTE Axon 30 Ultra is already available with the Snapdragon 888 SOC, so we don’t think the Axon 30 is also going to be a flagship phone.

ZTE made its Axon 20 available globally last year, so we are expecting the same to be the case with Axon 30.
