How to test gold for being real at John Fish Jewelers in Las Vegas, Nevada. In this clip, we are using 14kt and 18kt nitric acid to gold test whether or not these jewelry pieces are real or fake gold.
When determining if an item is real, we place it through a variety of tests. The most popular test for many jewelers and pawn shops, is by using nitric acid. By scratching the metal on the black stone, we are then able to pour the solution on top to confirm if a piece is authentic. If the solution disappears, it means the item has failed and is not a genuine piece of jewelry. However, if it holds the acid for a specific time frame, it has passed that specific test. At times, further testing may be needed.
In this video, we are showing how the two different types of nitric acid react when put through the testing!
