The 2025 Mercedes-AMG GLC63 S is not like its predecessor. Gone is the iconic 4.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V8 engine, with it replaced by a 2.0-litre single-turbo four-cylinder unit, which forms part of a so-called E Performance plug-in hybrid powertrain alongside not one, not two, but three electric motors.
On paper, it doesn't sound like much of an upgrade for the high-performance mid-size SUV, but its bent eight's 375kW of power and 700Nm of torque pale in comparison to its PHEV successor's whopping 500kW/1020Nm, with 350kW/545Nm coming from the half-size ICE alone.
In this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Stephen Ottley gets behind the wheel of the new GLC 63 S E Performance to find out how its new-age powertrain measures up against more traditional rivals like the BMW X3 M, and whether or not AMG made the right choice with the downsized PHEV.
