In April 2012 the Ohio State Fire Marshal released a report about smoke alarms that claimed, "There are no statistical differences in the performance of the two existing types of smoke alarms initially discussed, i.e. ionization or photoelectric."
This report outraged Ohio fire officials who had discovered the life-threatening defects with the ionization type of smoke alarm in most Ohioan homes.
