Samurai kenbu (“sword dance”) is a traditional performing art with a Japanese sword 'katana' and fan. In feudal times, samurai danced with their swords and fans to give themselves courage or to achieve mental concentration. This amazing art form is being preserved and shared by the Samurai Kenbu Theater, a school in Kyoto. This is the only school that has opened their doors to give visitors a taste of a magical world not usually shared with foreigners. Today, you will meet the amazing performers of Samurai Kenbu Theater, learn about this beautiful, powerful art form and get the chance to try it for yourself - learn the basics and then (a portion of) a choreography to a famous poem, Nipponto, written by Otori Keisuke, a samurai in the late 19th century who fought in the Meiji restoration. Culture, music, dance, samurai history… we’ve got it all today on Lost Suitcases, Souls Driven by Wanderlust.
If you want to get up off the couch and play with us, you need to find something rod-like to use as a sword. No rods? No problem. Samurai Kenbu masters will show us how to make a sword using rolled-up newspapers and tape. No excuses! Join us and try it for yourself.
