5 Most Haunted Caves YOU SHOULD NEVER ENTER
Thousands of holiday makers every year jet off to sunny destinations across the world, for sun, sea or snow. But for some thrill seekers the standard package holiday is not enough. They want to test their endurance, their nerve and their stamina. For these thrill seekers a trip to a cave is the perfect accompaniment to add some spark into their vacation.
Caves have always given us a sense of mystery and an undertone of fear. We know they’re dangerous, and many have perished cave diving in the centuries gone by. We don’t know what creatures may be lurking in the shadows or how safe the rocks are, yet cave exploration has never been more popular. Could it be the fact so many of them are still left unexplored? Could it be that they go on for miles and they provide a whole new world longing to be discovered? All we know is that nobody wants to be trapped in the depths of darkness, underground, gasping for their last mortal breath, yet they still go!
Maybe it’s because of cult films such as the 2006 release The Descent that glamorises cave exploration, maybe the attraction of being plonked into a musky dark hole and subjected to the perils of man-eating cave creatures be too much a draw? Or perhaps very little people are aware that 5% of cave divers die in caves, nobody knows.
What we do know is that some caves are haunted, and those that are brave enough have been subjected to scary events and paranormal activity far beyond what they could have ever imagined. Some lived to tell the tale and some, did not. So, in case you were thinking of planning a caving adventure, here are 5 of the most haunted caves in the world.
THE HELLFIRE CAVES
Formerly known as the West Wycombe Caves, Hellfire Caves are located in the leafy county of Buckinghamshire in England around 40 miles from London. From the outside they look like very unassuming, but nothing is unassuming about the perils that lie within. Hellfire caves form a network of chalk and flint caverns stretching an amazing quarter of a mile underground. They were originally excavated in the mid 1700s by Francis Dashwood, the co-founder of the Hellfire Club, a secret society that met regularly in the caves.
THE CAVE HOTEL AT THE GRAND CANYON CAVERNS
Sure it looks stunning and attracts thousands of visitors every year there’s more to the Grand Canyon than initially meets the eye. It’s long been reported that its nooks and crannies hold many secrets and have been the subject of a variety of stories of hauntings.
THE MOANING CAVERN
Quite predictably, the eerily named Moaning Cavern in Vallecito, California inherited its name from the moaning sound the air makes when it blows through the cavern.
BELL WITCH CAVE
Meet anybody in the northern Robertson County, Tennessee and they will tell you about the legend of the Bell Witch. It is said that in 1804, a farmer names John Bell moved to a farm near Red River with his wife and children. The property included a cave which later became known as ‘’Bell Witch Cave’’ named such because it is said to be haunted by a witch called Kate Batts, bitter and disgruntled because she felt cheated by John Bell in the sale of the land.
MAMMOTH CAVE
Last but definitely not least is the Mammoth cave, which actually inspired H.P. Lovecraft’s story ‘The Beast in the cave’’. The cave system may well be one of the world’s largest haunted caves, located in Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky, United States. Most of the cave is still yet to be explored and records suggest that people began using the cave in prehistoric times dating back as far as 4,000 years ago to bury their dead. The burials went on for over 2,000 years before suddenly leaving the cave. Nobody quite knows what caused them to flee, but what is known is that numerous ghostly sightings have been spotted over the subsequent years.
