Bosnia Herzegovina is going through its greatest crisis since the end of the war in 1995. On December 2021, Bosnian Serb politicians voted to withdraw from state-level institutions including security services, tax system and judiciary as well as to establish an independent army. While all of these provisions are in direct violation of the Dayton Peace Accords, which officially ended the Bosnian war, they threaten not only the country’s sovereignty but also regional stability. Bosnia’s High Representative Christian Schmitt who is tasked with ensuring the implementation of Dayton warned that the move is “tantamount to secession without proclaiming it”.
