In this KAS MDPD mini-series we engage with MEP Željana Zovko (@EPP, CR), Vice-Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, and the EU Special Representative for the Sahel Emanuela Del Re on the EU's actions in the Sahel.
👉The Russian aggression in Ukraine has had serious effects on the Sahel, including grain shortages. Moreover, Russian #disinformation as well as #Wagner soldiers in #Mali has also affected the cooperation between Europe and the countries in the region.
🔎 The Sahel faces many challenges, including #terrorism, #foodsecurity and the negative the effects of #climate change. The EU needs to adapt a horizontal approach in order to support and to secure its “southern border”.
👉 Despite these challenges, the EU and its member states should continue their engagement in the region. The EU can provide a much more attractive offer for a mutually beneficial cooperation if it remains united and meet the Sahelian countries at eye level, without giving in on its fundamental principles, which include #humanrights and the respect for #ruleoflaw.
