Facts About Hungary
***********************************************
Historical Origins:
Hungary was formerly part of the Roman Empire. After the fall of Rome, the people of the region—the Huns—gave the country its name: Hungary.
It’s one of the oldest countries in Europe, with a rich and complex history that dates back centuries.
Geography and Language:
Covering an area of 93,028 square kilometres, Hungary is slightly smaller than the U.S. state of Indiana.
The official language is Hungarian, which is unique—it’s not an Indo-European language. However, many Hungarians also speak English, German, French, or Russian.
Communist Era and Transition:
After World War II, Hungary fell under communist rule. By the late 1980s, it faced significant debt—$18 billion, the highest per-capita indebtedness in Europe.
However, Hungary made significant strides after the fall of communism. It joined NATO in 1999 and became a member of the European Union in 20041.
Thermal Springs and Nobel Prize Winners:
Hungary boasts over 1,500 spas with Roman, Greek, and Turkish architectural influences. These thermal springs are a treat for visitors.
The country has produced 13 Nobel Prize winners across various fields, except for the Peace category. Interestingly, all these laureates emigrated from Hungary.
Education and Olympic Success:
Hungary places great emphasis on education, with almost 5% of its GDP dedicated to it. This commitment has resulted in an impressive 99% literacy rate.
In sports, Hungarians have consistently excelled. They’ve won gold medals in every Olympics they’ve competed in, ranking just behind Finland in terms of gold medals per population size.
Cultural Festivals and University Legacy:
The University of Pécs, founded in 1367, is Hungary’s oldest university.
The country hosts the Sziget Festival, the largest cultural and musical festival in Europe. The Budapest Spring Festival also attracts artists and musicians from around the world.
Name Order:
Hungarians write their last name first and their first name last—a unique convention that might confuse outsiders!
