STORYLINE
President of the semiautonomous Kurdish region in northern Iraq Massoud Barzani met Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Tehran on Wednesday.
Barzani met Ahmadinejad on the second day of his trip to Iran.
A day earlier Barzani met Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki and during a joint news briefing, the two addressed the US-Iraqi security pact that would keep American troops in Iraq for three more years.
US and Iraqi leaders face a December 31 deadline to approve the deal which would replace an expiring United Nations mandate authorising the US-led forces in Iraq.
Iraq's Cabinet decided on Tuesday to ask the US for changes to the draft agreement as key Shiite lawmakers warned the deal has little chance of approval as it stands.
If the Iraqi Parliament fails to approve the draft before December 31, there would be no legal basis for the US-led military mission to stay on.
Iran, which is close to Shiite parties who dominate Iraq's government, has repeatedly expressed its opposition to any security deal that allows American forces to remain in Iraq.
Tehran contends that the American presence is the cause of instability in Iraq and the region.
