The fifth Kalvari Class submarine, INS Vagir, was commissioned into the Indian Navy on Monday in Mumbai. The INS would improve the force's ISR and special operations capabilities. The INS Vagir, built in Mumbai by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited with technology transferred from France, was commissioned in a ceremony attended by Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R Hari Kumar. INS Vagir is outfitted with some of the world's best sensors. According to the Navy, Vagir's weapons package includes enough wire-guided torpedoes and subsurface to surface missiles to neutralize a large enemy fleet. The submarine can also launch marine commandos for special operations, and its powerful diesel engines can charge batteries quickly for a stealth mission.
