I've been around sales a good part of my life, I teach agricultural sales at the local university. Finding a salesperson that can work with you is one of the most important steps when buying a tractor.
If you were buying a car, the salesperson would be a lot less important. You know how to drive a car and what most of the controls do. If you're buying your first tractor, the salesperson can be the teacher, the guide, the service advisor and the trainer. It's real important to get he right person.
So what makes a good salesperson? First, you want someone who has a good attitude and you get along with. Someone that shares the same culture as you, who has good communication skills, and who is willing to take the time to help you understand all aspects of the tractor.
Secondly, you need a salesperson that asks a lot of questions about what you want to do with your tractor and listens to your answers. Then, they help you select the best product to accomplish the tasks you have. They're heavy on empathy, the ability to see the world through your eyes.
If you're buying your first tractor you want a salesperson with a decent amount of product knowledge and understanding of the various jobs that you'll be using it for, and be a good educator. A salesperson who is willing to take the time to train you about proper selection, operation, maintenance and safe practices with your new tractor and equipment is very valuable when you're getting started.
You want a salesperson and dealership that's trustworthy and going to be around to take care of you. That's hard to know going in. I'd recommend getting recommendations from other folks who have done business with them and check online reviews.
Finally, you need a salesperson with good follow-up. In my mind, that's what separates a decent salesperson from a really good one. Do they return phone calls/e-mails and texts? When they tell you they'll call you at a certain time do they do that? Salespeople are busy and the business is seasonable and hectic at times, but maintaining communication is a big part of the job, and some are better at it than others.
Having a supportive salesperson will help make that first tractor buying experience a lot more tolerable. They're out there, you just have to find them.
