"I'll See You In My Dreams" performed on my modified Gretsch Jim Dandy "Rubber Bridge" guitar in C standard tuning. Thanks for watching!
Recently, several artists including Jeff Tweedy, Taylor Swift, and Ariel Posen have favored rubber bridge guitars for their unique and almost dead-like tone. Typically they are old 50's or 60's department store guitars that have been reworked to play like a modern instrument (with a rubber bridge of course).
I had this Gretsch lying around so I decided to do some modifications to try and achieve the same tone. I used a strip of 1/8" neoprene rubber and fit it directly in front of the saddle with slits cut for the strings. I originally tried using the rubber as the saddle itself, but it couldn't hold the tension of the strings. I'm currently using D'addario Chrome Flatwound 12's tuned to C standard. Lastly, I purchased a $12 Luvay magnetic sound hole pickup off of Amazon just to test things out. I eventually plan on mounting a Hot Rail pickup in the neck and a K&K Pure Mini with stereo outputs (a common configuration for these guitars).
