O LEVEL / N LEVEL:
EXTRACTION OF IRON EXPLAINED. How do we extract iron from haematite (iron ore)? Today I will be talking about the extraction of iron from haematite, also known Iron ore by explaining the processes and reactions that occur in blast furnace. Some reactions involve oxidation and reduction, along with the use of density to justify the positioning of the outlet taps. The reaction of reacting carbon with oxygen to form carbon dioxide is exothermic and the reaction of carbon dioxide and carbon to form carbon monoxide is endothermic.
Definitions:
Coke: Carbon, usually in the form of coal or charcoal
Limestone: Calcium carbonate
Haematite (or hematite): Mixture of Iron(III) oxide and silicon dioxide (aka sand)
Exothermic: Reaction releases heat
Endothermic: Reaction absorbs heat
