Nancy C. Andrews is the Nanaline H. Duke Professor of Pediatrics and Professor of Pharmacology and Cancer Biology at Duke University. From 2007 to 2017 she served as Dean of the Duke University School of Medicine and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
Prior to moving to Duke, she served as the George Richards Minot Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard University, Senior Associate in Medicine at the Children’s Hospital Boston, and a distinguished physician of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. She was the Director of the Harvard-MIT MD-Ph.D. program from 1999 to 2003 and Dean for Basic Sciences and Graduate Studies at Harvard Medical School from 2003 to 2007. A pediatric hematologist-oncologist by training, her laboratory research focused on iron biology and mouse models of human diseases. She was a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator from 1993 to 2006.
She is the past President of the American Society of Clinical Investigation, a member and Governing Council member of the National Academy of Medicine, a member of the National Academy of Sciences, and Chair of the Board of Directors of the Burroughs Wellcome Fund. She is also a member of the Board of Directors of Novartis AG and a member of the MIT Corporation. Dr. Andrews has been a committee member for the Academy’s ARISE II report and the New Models for U.S. Science and Technology Policy study.
She was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2007 and serves as the Chair of the Academy’s Board of Directors.
