Over the past year, the BMA has been working hard to gather firsthand feedback from doctors to inform the negotiations on the consultant contract in England and Northern Ireland, and the junior doctor contract across the UK.
The ‘What’s a Doctor Worth?’ series has been a major part of this work. The BMA partnered with leading think tank, Britain Thinks, to deliver six innovative deliberative events across the UK. Over 220 consultants, SAS and junior doctors attended with representatives from the BMA negotiating teams to discuss key issues relating to the negotiations.
The events combined interactive films, voting and debate on pay, careers and how best to deliver high quality healthcare in the context of the proposed contract changes.
Doctors identified their top priorities relating to their contract, with full and frank discussion of the challenges involved in negotiations including the financial pressures and political priorities such as seven day services.
