In John 10:11-13, Jesus declares himself the Good Shepherd who dies for the sheep when the wolf comes to snatch and scatter them, while the hired helper runs away.
Sacrifice: Good Shepherd dies for the sheep (John 10:11) The defining characteristic of the Good Shepherd (I AM statement) is sacrifice. This sacrifice flows from ‘agape’ love for the sheep. God’s love is selfless and sacrificial.
Snatches & Scatters: Wolf comes, snatches, and scatters the sheep (John 10:12) Another word-picture, metaphor, for Jesus and Christians’ enemies, is an attacking wolf. Beware of wolves among the sheep!
Self-preservation: Hired man runs away from sacrifice (John 10:12-13) The Good Shepherd motived by selfless and sacrificial love is contrasted with the hired servant whose motives are misguided. The struggle and danger reveal the motivation.
