Despite SpaceX's eventual goal of achieving pinpoint propulsive landings with the Dragon spacecraft it ended up descending and splashing down in the ocean using parachutes similar to the Apollo and Gemini capsules of the past As a result returning to Earth on a Dragon meant experiencing a rougher ride compared to the smoother landing that the shuttle provided While the rough splashdown was manageable for many payloads it posed a significant challenge for sensitive experiments Adding to the complexity the Dragon capsule would descend into the Pacific Ocean several hundred kilometers off the coast While this made recovery operations easier for SpaceX based in California it presented a problem for NASA They lacked appropriate payload processing facilities on the west coast requiring the transported cargo to be sent either to Johnson Space Center in Houston or all the way back to Kennedy Space Center
