STORYLINE:
A spokesman for the British military said on Monday that an advance party of just under 100 Royal Marines have arrived at Bagram airfield in Afghanistan.
Their task is to prepare for the arrival of the remaining bulk of the 1,700-member British force which is expected to be deployed within the next few weeks.
The spokesman, Sergeant Steve Melbourne said the logistics regiment is now preparing tents for the main advance party to move into when they arrive later this week.
The British force is based around 45 ( Pronounced four-five, not forty five) Commando, a specialist mountain warfare unit based in Scotland.
It will consist of around 650 front line assault troops, plus around 1000 support troops made up of engineers, artillery, signallers and logistics experts.
They will be deployed by British Chinook helicopters and will be supported by U.S. helicopter gunships and fixed wing ground attack planes.
Over the weekend, the US military has brought into Bagram a small number of A-10 "Thunderbolt" attack jets to bolster America's capability to provide close air support for combat operations against al-Qaida and the Taliban.
