Bannerman Island was discovered by Europeans during the first navigation of the Hudson River by the first Dutch settlers in New York, in the highlands of the Hudson River.
During the Revolutionary War, the Patriots attempted to prevent the British from passing upriver by placing 106 upright iron-tipped logs between the island across the river. Still, these obstructions did not prevent a British flotilla from burning Kingston in 1777.
General George Washington later signed a plan to use the island as a military prison; however, there is no evidence that a prison has ever been built there.
