The only multi-faculty university in Finland (or anyplace outside of Sweden) that is solely in Swedish is Åbo Akademi University (Swedish: Åbo Akademi [ˈגːbʊ akadɛˈmiː], Finnish: [ˈoːbu ɑkɑdeˈmiː]). Although it has activity in Vaasa, its primary location is in Turku (the Swedish name for the city is Åbo). In 1918, Åbo Akademi was established as Finland's third university through private donations, partly to restore Turku as a university town and partly because the Swedish language was perceived as being endangered at the University of Helsinki. In 1920, the Finnish University of Turku was established for similar reasons and likewise through private donations. Prior to becoming a public institution in 1981, Åbo Akademi was a private institution.
The university consists of four faculties:
Faculty of Arts, Psychology and Theology (located in Turku)
Faculty of Education and Welfare Studies (located in Vaasa)
Faculty of Science and Engineering (located in Turku, with some activity also in Vaasa)
Faculty of Social Sciences, Business and Economics (located in Turku, with some activity also in Vaasa).
