Here's an entertaining clip shot almost entirely on the Lower Iverson in Chatsworth, Calif., from the old Columbia serial "Mandrake the Magician." The clip includes one of the earliest sightings of the Grove Cabin — as the "watchman's shack" for the phone company. The cabin appears in the opening shot and shows up a few other times during the clip.
For some reason the bad guys have it in for the phone company and destroy a bunch of telephone poles, which is good fun to watch. The destruction takes place in and around Iverson's Eucalyptus Grove, and features a couple of poles crashing dramatically against Flat Rock — not to mention the obligatory group fistfight next to Flat Rock.
The exteriors are all shot at Iverson, and almost all of the rock features can still be found at the site today, although the Grove Cabin is long gone.
Starting at 3:27 we get a good look at Nyoka Cliff and much of Iverson's Upper Gorge, with a steel tower erected on the site of the old camera mount.
These are all "famous movie rocks," having appeared in hundreds of B-Westerns, TV shows, serials and other productions, mainly from the 1930s through the 1950s.
