Interesting facts about Uskudar:
- Founded in the 7th century BC by Greek colonists, it was originally called Chrysopolis (Golden City), possibly because Persians kept their gold deposits there or due to its connection with mythological figure Chryses
- Uskudar was the first place in Istanbul where Turkish culture established itself, captured in 1339, making it the “Plymouth Rock of the Turkish Straits” and predating the conquest of Constantinople by 114 years
- The Ottomans renamed it to Üsküdar, meaning “Courier,” because it functioned as a post station for Asiatic couriers and served as the terminus for caravan routes from Syria and Asia
- The Şemsi Ahmed Paşa Mosque in Uskudar is known as “Kuskonmaz” (untouched by birds) because architect Sinan designed it so that strong Bosphorus winds prevent birds from landing on
