Do you have to collect sales tax when offering digital goods online? The common understanding is internet sales tax doesn't apply to digital goods. As with most assumptions, this one falls apart on closer inspection.
The following states currently have regulations in place requiring out-of-state retailers to collect and remit sales tax. More states will be jumping on this bandwagon.
Alabama, Arkansas, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Vermont, Washington and Wisconsin.
