With baseline measurements taken in our previous video, we are now ready to dive in and modify the 2005 Piaggio Typhoon 50cc 2-stroke Hi Per 2 engine.
STAGE ONE (PART 1): De-restricting the bike. Why? Who doesn't want free power. In its pure un-restricted form, the bike will perform like it should have from the factory without all the government regulations to make the bike slower and more environmentally friendly. For the North American models, the only restriction is the brass restrictor covering the 17.5 Dellorto PHVA carburetor opening. European models will have a washer in the variator restricting maximum speed and an exhaust restrictor for emission. In the first part of this video I will show how to remove the brass restrictor. The following episodes will show you how to tune the carburetor after removing the restrictor for peak performance.
*** Many claim that the bike performs worse after removing the carburetor. Some even say that the brass restrictor is supposed to cover the carburetor to IMPROVE performance. While there is some truth to that since PHVA carburetors (slide carbs) are more sensitive to change, I will demonstrate to you if the carburetor is turned correctly, you will see more gains to make this change worthwhile.
If you want your bike to bury the speedo needle like ours did, subscribe and stay tuned for future episodes. We will show you how to destrict the bike from factory, install the Leo Vince ZXR exhaust, open up the intake, and modify the transmission. Come along with us as we transform this little 50cc scooter from a slow and boring bike to a fast and peppy machine that it should've been from factory.
Other bikes that shares the same platform/engine includes Vespa, Piaggio, Aprilia, Peugot, Gilera, TPH, Typhoon, LT50, LX50, ET50, Scarabeo, Stalker, Zip, Fly, etc.
