You’re not alone in your fight against cancer. At Cincinnati Children’s, our patient-centered care team is focused on helping you through your journey.
Your care team consists of two care groups that work together to provide you with all the resources you will need. There’s your medical team which takes care of your physical care, and there’s your wellness team which will help with your emotional, spiritual and social needs throughout your diagnosis and treatment.
Meet the members of your medical team. The medical team will handle all of your physical care. Members of that team include your doctors, your nurse care manager and specialists. You will have a group of doctors managing your cancer treatment. Your Primary Oncologist will direct and oversee care throughout your entire treatment, both inpatient and outpatient. Your attending doctor is a specialist in your child’s disease. She is the oncologist assigned to your care for the day. Other care team members are the Fellow, Resident, Hospitalist, Nurse Practitioners and your Bedside Nurses. The Nurse Care Manager coordinates your care plan and can help you better understand the overall process and the specifics of your plan. Specialists you will meet include a Dietitian, the Fertility Preservation Team, a Pharmacist and a team of Physical and Occupational Therapists. They help you in areas that fit your specific needs.
The second group making up your care team concentrates on wellness. Meet the members of your wellness team. Your wellness team is made up of four focuses. Within the emotional support and resources focus, social workers will provide emotional support to you and your family and connect you with resources. Child Life Specialists will explain the care process and make the experience a positive one through age-appropriate interactions.
Within the education focus, a School Intervention Specialist can help you to create the best education plan for you with your school and teachers. A bedside teacher will help you stay on track with your schoolwork while you are at the hospital.
Within the coping strategy and thinking skills focus, a psychologist can help you with coping strategies, and a neuropsychologist can address whether there are any effects on your thinking skills because of your medical condition or treatment.
Rounding out your care team are members who are dedicated to your Spiritual Health, including Chaplains, Holistic Health specialists and Music Therapists.
If you ever have questions at any point in your treatment process, please don’t hesitate to ask any member of your medical or wellness teams. At Cincinnati Children’s, our dedicated team of professionals is focused on providing you with the best care available. Our patient-centered approach puts you at the center of our universe as we help you through your journey. If you have any more additional questions about these teams, ask your nurse care manager, or check out any of the videos related to your questions.
