There's been a huge rise in the number of hate crimes recorded by police in England and Wales. In the past year there were more than 80,000 offences - an increase of 29% on the year before. It is the biggest increase since the Home Office began keeping records five years ago.
It reflects a spike that was seen around last year's EU referendum, as well as after the terror attacks in London and Manchester. But forces around the country are now widening the definition of what constitutes a hate crime to include gender-based hate crimes.
