This video will teach you how to backside 180 in no time! I’m teaching you how to backside 180 from your position of view.
The backside 180 is also a beginner trick and that’s why it’s amongst the basic flatground tricks that I’m covering. You wanna make sure you learn all these basic tricks the proper way because if you continue skateboarding you’ll need those for more complicated combinations.
Before you learn any basic trick like the backside 180, you want to be able to ride around on a skateboard. Try to make sure that you’re comfortable on a skateboard in general. The only trick you should be able to do for the backside 180 is the Ollie. You can check out my other Ollie tutorial for that one.
Another trick you might wanna learn before the backside 180 is the frontside 180. You definitely don’t need it for this trick tho because you can learn a backside 180 without knowing how to frontside 180 perfectly fine. But I do recommend it because it’s an easier 180 rotation, it’s easier to learn and it might help you to learn the backside 180 faster. So if you wanna learn the frontside one first you can also check out my frontside 180 tutorial for that one.
The Backside 180 is a skateboard trick which requires you to turn your whole board and body 180 degrees while jumping. The direction in which you’re doing the rotation is called backside, this may sound easy now but once you get into nollies and obstacles this gets messy so just try to remember:
A 180 on flat like the way I’m doing right here is called backside!
This backside rotation is also the main reason it’s so much harder than a frontside 180. You’re riding backwards when landing and It just feels unnatural in the beginning, but keep in mind that you’ll get used to it after practicing. Stay positive and you will land this trick!!
Learn how to backside 180 beginner foot-positioning:
Now it’s time for the foot-positioning. Place your front foot right beneath the front bolts just like you would for an Ollie. You can place it like that or even a little bit more forward so it won’t slip off when doing the backside rotation. I always tell you to play around with this because some foot-positions might feel more comfortable for you. Place your backfoot on your tail and place this one definitely a bit more forward than you would for an Ollie. Placing it a bit more forward helps you to get that backside 180 scoop better and it will also help you to not scrape your back heel when landing. Don’t place it too much forward tho because you’ll shift your board too much. If you’re regular it’ll look like this.
For any body variation like the backside 180, the movement of the shoulders is really important.
To get ready for a backside 180 you really want to turn your shoulders a little bit to the opposite way first so you can get some extra force into your rotation. Then just before you pop you already start turning your shoulders. It’s your shoulders first and then the rest of your body follows.
Now, let’s take a look at the movement as a whole. The movement I’m talking about in my videos is the movement which has to do with your board when you’re jumping up, so in this case the movement after bending your knees and turning your shoulders to the opposite way a bit. After that Step 1 follows. Step 1: Turn your shoulders and body. As you see here, my shoulders and upper body are already rotated, even my board already has some rotation before you hear the popping sound. All your rotation really comes from your upper body so it’s important to turn your shoulders. Step 2: scoop. Lean into your backside 180 rotation and scoop your board. It feels a little like kicking your board away behind you. Scooping is basically popping while your board already has some rotation. You can clearly hear a difference between a pop and a scoop. Step 3: rotate further and land. You’re now getting your last 90 degrees of rotation. Keep your balance, get ready to land and roll away.
Common mistake with this trick is that you won’t be able to turn enough. You’ll land 90 degrees for example. If this is the case, try to put more force into the turning of your shoulders. You can also practice the movement really well by not popping first. Just do a couple backside 180 powerslides on flat and you will really get that feeling of a backside 180.
Thanks for watching!
