Today we ask "What's In The Box?" as we look at the AMT/ERTL 6581 - 1940 Ford Coupe Model Kit From 1986. This is a model car unboxing video.
The AMT/ERTL 1940 Ford Coupe model kit has three building options : Stock, Custom and Drag Racer. The custom version of this model is inspired by the custom cars that were making the scene in 1961.
The 1940 Ford Deluxe Coupe model car kit was originally part of the AMT Trophy Series cars released in 1961. Since that time, the AMT 1940 Ford Coupe Model Kit has been reissued and modified more than a dozen times. Despite it's age, this kit has held up well and is currently available from Round2. (At least in 2019)
The beauty of the 1961 AMT Trophy Series Ford kits is in their interchangeability of parts between all the other AMT 1961 Trophy Series Ford kits. Therefore, you can build a 1939 Ford Coupe from this kit by swapping the fenders and 1939 pieces from the AMT 1939 Ford tudor sedan model.
The custom swap-out fun continues in the Trophy series as each Ford model car came with a custom 1958-1961 era engine that had the same length and engine mounts as the other Ford Trophy Series cars. Along with the factory stock 80 h.p. Ford L-Head motor, this kit comes with the all new for 1961 Buick 401 c.i. Nail Head motor with your choice of tri-carbs for the custom engine option or the menacing GMC 6-71 Blower for the competition coupe version.
However, if you wanted something different, you could swap out this motor for any of the other motors in the Ford Trophy Series kits, such as the vicious 1961 Oldsmobile 394 c.i. motor with the Hillborn fuel Injectors from the 1939 Ford Tudor Sedan kit or the beautiful all chrome Thunderbird 390 c.i motor from the 1934 Ford Pickup Truck. That was the beauty of the 1961 Trophy Series car kits!
There are three ways to build this model kit.
The first is the "Direct from the Ford Factory" 1940 Ford Deluxe Coupe.
All the factory stock parts to build this version are included in the kit. You will use the factory stock universal chrome pieces, such as the rear deck handle, bumpers, wheel rings and hub caps, and fuel filler spout. The car rides on four skinny Firestone tires and uses the Ford V8-81A, commonly called the "24 stud" engine because it uses twenty four studs to hold down each head.
In the custom street coupe version, AMT gives you the new for 1961 Buick Nail Head 401 c.i. engine with triple carburetors, Buick manifold, chrome exhaust headers and stock front engine cover. You also get a chrome dropped front axle, fender skirts, spot lights, and the factory bumpers have been replaced with Nerf Bars. The old Ford wheels and Firestone tires have also been replaced with (my favorite) Keystone Mag wheels and Goodyear tires.
A little tip from the original 1961 instructions is to use the custom spotlights as bumper mounted fog lights. I might try that in a future build!
The final build option is the competition Coupe. An aerodynamic 1940 front grill insert is included with the kit for this option that can be used with the hood. You can even leave off the grill entirely as many drag race cars of that era ran without a hood, radiator and grill. Less weight equals more speed!
The competition coupe A/Gasser option includes the 1961 Buick Nail Head 401 c.i. engine with Hillborn Fuel Injection, a chain driven GMC 6-71 blower, magneto ignition, open Lake Pipes and racing exhaust headers, tachometer and fuel gauges, roll bar, pressure tank, drag slicks and a chrome plated dropped front axle. You can also remove the front and rear bumper brackets for that authentic drag race look.
Although this is a review of the 1986 edition of the AMT 1940 Ford Deluxe Coupe, this is one of my all time favorite kits which is easy to build and goes together well and I am glad that AMT re-released it once again under Round2.
