STORYLINE:
As the Indonesian military tightens its grip on the war-torn province of Aceh, refugees start to gather on improvised camps, like this one in East Aceh.
Around 2,000 people have set up camp in an open space, most of them women and young children. The refugees have no military or police protection.
The military has admitted that troops are facing difficulties confronting highly-mobile guerrillas who melt into the population.
At least 90 Free Aceh Movement (GAM) rebels have been killed since the start of the major military campaign to root out separatists on May 19, the military spokesman said.
Twelve soldiers and police and 15 civilians have been killed.
Up to 40,000 police and soldiers are confronting an estimated 5,000 rebels from GAM, which has been fighting for an independent state for the province on the northern tip of Sumatra Island since 1976.
Previous bloody incursion into the region have fueled the rebellion, one of several in outlying provinces that threaten to divide the archipelago.
Some 10,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in the past 27 years.
This time, the government in Jakarta said it hoped to encourage support for the offensive among the 4.3 (m) million people who live in oil-rich Aceh.
