Everywhere in Groningen and Haren, city tree workers are aggressively pruning street and park trees, removing up to 40% of a tree's crown and removing all internal branches, a technique commonly known as lions tailing. This video is taken in Haren of ETT workers who have systematically cleared out all internal branches of the tree's crown, claiming this makes the tree safer.
This technique is discredited by every international urban forestry and aborist association program, yet here in Groningen, somehow it has become the standard pruning technique. Lions tailing severely stresses the tree, diminishing its ability to feed itself through photosynthesis; creating large wounds susceptible for rot; causing sun burn on the trunk; and limiting the tree's stability in wind (as branches become heavy at the ends where extra foliage is forced to grow to recover extreme losses).
