With an economy and health care system atrophied by a decade-long crisis, a population that is the EU’s second oldest and the prevalence of intergenerational families living in close quarters, the impact of COVID-19 in Greece could have been disastrous. Yet Greece’s record on managing the pandemic has been a success story: the country has experienced among the lowest reported cases of COVID-19 and related deaths in all of Europe, and at the peak of infection used only a fraction of its hospital bed capacity.
