Filmed on 29 September 2020.
With this autumn’s political conferences moving online, we’re bringing together politicians, academics, think tanks and members of the public to discuss a year that has fundamentally changed Britain, and where we go from here.
In just a few months the Covid-19 pandemic has seen the UK’s CO2 emissions drop by up to 27%. But such reductions are temporary, and the challenge facing Britain is how to make the country’s economic recovery compatible with its environmental ambitions.
Hundreds of companies have called for an economic plan that prioritizes the climate, and it seems the public is hungry for change too. The Chancellor has so far committed to a £2bn grant scheme to insulate homes - creating jobs and reducing emissions at the same time. But major questions remain about how the UK will actually achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Featuring: Kwasi Kwarteng MP, Julia Elizabeth King, Baroness Brown of Cambridge, James Diggle (head of Energy and Climate Change at the Confederation of British Industry), Keith Anderson (chief executive officer for ScottishPower), James Forsyth (political editor of The Spectator).
