Judo Bank Economic Advisor Warren Hogan says the economy is ready to absorb the impact of the end of JobKeeper, and that there is no better “environment” to find another job because the “demand for labour” in Australia is very strong.
Mr Hogan also said the loss of JobKeeper would highlight the “problem” of getting the people who have lost work into the new jobs which are being created.
“It’s not just in different industries it’s in different geographies – there are plenty of stories of skills shortages and labour shortages out there – we have got to reconfigure the workforce.”
Mr Hogan said while the JobKeeper program was not perfect, it was not “wasted” as businesses that profited from it have been using it to “invest” and “employ” - while employee recipients who have saved their JobKeeper benefits will look to spend it.
“It’s not wasted, it’s actually the buffer and it’s been really critical to getting us back off government life support. A private sector business-led recovery is on the offering now in 2021.”
