Roses are heavy feeders and need to be fertilized. Rose expert Bill Dickerson says in the fall he puts out organic fertilizer like compost. He lists some useful fertilizers. He does the same in the spring. He recommends testing pH to make sure it is in the correct range which will allow the roses to take up the fertilizer. He also uses Epsom salt.
