In this edition of the Center for Latinx Digital Media's Virtual Seminar Series, Prof. Raquel Moreira (Southwestern University) made a presentation entitled "Mestiçagem, Authenticity, and Racial Spatiality in Anitta’s “Girl from Rio”" The event was moderated by Thayane Henriques, a Ph.D. student at Northwestern University and an affiliate of the Center.
Presentation abstract: Anitta’s music video for “Girl from Rio” utilizes a series of symbolic dichotomies that authenticate a particular construction of Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro, one that sanctions notions of peaceful racial mixing (or mestiçagem) while exposing, perhaps unintentionally, the city’s anti-black racial spatiality. These ideologies of supposed racial democracy present in “Girl from Rio”—and sold to global audiences as authentic Latinidad—have been widely endorsed in the historical assemblies of ethnonational identities in Latin/x America.
