June 8 2024 ...for World Oceans Day. .... French poet (1842-1908)

..."the sea and its immense green gaze..." (André Fraigneau : La Grâce Humaine)
I was sitting in front of the sea on the pebble.
Under a clear sky, the waves of violet azure,
After having swelled by running from the open sea,
As a man weighed down with a burden unloads it,
They broke in front of me, rhythmic and successive.
I observed these heavy and massive sea packs
Who marked with a hurray their regular falls
And then they withdrew, moaning on the stones.
And this noise intoxicated me; and, to listen better,
I covered my face and closed my eyes.
So, hearing the waves on the shore
Bubbling and running, and always, and without rest
Collapse making this rhythmic crash,
I, the humble observer of rhythm, thought
That it must indeed be a sacred thing,
Since He who knows, who commands and who creates
Did not draw these musical means from nothing,
These cliffs with rocks dug for echoes,
These sonorous pebbles, these shrill shells
Constantly bumped and rolled on the beaches
By the wave, for so many thousands of winters,
So that the Ocean recites verses to us.
