The tape was really playing a message and self-destruct himself without any human intervention.
Man Slayer and I made this special effect for an animation. We simply used amateur rocket fuel and the electric igniter that we put inside a 4 track cassette prerecorded. A small piece of foil was making a contact at the end of the tape igniting the whole thing.
