STORYLINE:
Peruvian authorities on Wednesday destroyed hundreds of illegal slot machines, which they say targeted children.
The 513 slot machines were seized by the police during the last months of 2007 and early in 2008.
AP Television footage showed the machines being destroyed by bulldozer in the capital, Lima.
The destruction of slot machines was supervised by Manuel San Roman, the Director of Games, Casinos and Slot Machines, which operates under the Ministry of Commerce and Tourism.
"These machines are prohibited because they are directed towards minors, they haven't passed the minimum official standards. As they haven't passed these tests, these machines can be dangerous for the mental health or the physical health of the people and also they could create problems due to their electric voltage, they could cause an accident," he said.
Police said another 625 slot machines had been seized in the past few months.
Many of the slot machines were seized in Lima, Huaraz and Huancayo, officials said, and not only from casinos or gambling centres but also from hairdressers, bars, pharmacies or bakeries.
Authorities reported a surge of teenage gambling in Peru with casinos and slot machines centres proliferating, especially in middle-lower class neighbourhoods.
