Yamunotri is the starting point of the Char Dham Yatra pilgrimage, which progresses from Yamunotri to Gangotri, then Kedarnath and Badrinath.

At Yamunotri, devotees pray at Surya Kund, a natural spring of hot water named after the Sun God, believed to be the father of River Yamuna. At the kund, pilgrims bathe and offer rice and potatoes as offerings to the god
Every year, thousands of pilgrims visit Yamunotri Dham and begin the Char Dham Yatra pilgrimage (May to October), which proceeds from Yamunotri to Gangotri, and then on to Kedarnath and Badrinath. The temple is dedicated to the Yamuna, the holy river second only to the Ganga according to Hindu beliefs.
