It is a tall, perennial plant, reaching up to 2 metres in height. The robust stems are profusely hairy with soft spreading hairs. The hairy leaves are 2–12 cm long and 0.5–3.5 cm wide. They are long and thin and are widest below the middle. They have sharply toothed edges and no stalk. The large flowers have four notched petals. These are purple-pink and are usually 10–16 mm long. The stigma is white and has four lobes. See more: [ Ссылка ]
This robust hairy-stemmed perennial grows to a height of 2m. The stemless elongated oval leaves have toothed margins and they are arranged in opposing pairs along the stems. Flowers of Great Willowherb are pinkish purple with paler centres and typically 2 to 3cm across. There are fine dark branching veins on their four petals, each petal having a single shallow notch. Chamerion angustifolium; Rosebay Willowherb is regarded as an alien on Iceland. It can be found in rural regions and along roadsides. I have seen this species thriving also in the woods of Hallormstaðir. It is a semi-tall species growing up to 30-70 cm. As such it is taller than the Arctic Riverbeauty (Chamerion latifolium) but the flowers are smaller, however larger than the "Epilobium" species. The tall inflorescence stems are quite characteristic. I encountered this species next to Hallormstaðir also west of Keflavik along the roadside. It only starts to bloom at the end of july (into august). It is member of the Willowherb family (Onagraceae). The Icelandic name of this species is Sigurskúfur. See more: [ Ссылка ]
Willowherbs are typically very quick to carpet large swathes of ground and may become key or dominant species of local ecosystems. In and around the United Kingdom, for example, rosebay willowherb (E. angustifolium) is widely found in mesotrophic grassland dominated by false oat-grass (Arrhenatherum elatius), cock's-foot (Dactylis glomerata), and red fescue (Festuca rubra), while great willowherb (Epilobium hirsutum) is found in mesotrophic grassland with stinging nettle (Urtica dioica). These two willowherb species are also seen to dominate open habitat early in ecological succession, to the virtual exclusion of other plant life. Broad-leaved willowherb (Epilobium montanum) is found characteristically, though not abundantly, in the mesotrophic grasslands with meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) and sometimes the uncommon Greek valerian (Polemonium caeruleum), which are peculiar to the Pennines. Most willowherbs will not tolerate shade trees and thus are limited to more recently disturbed patches, yielding to other plants over time. Consequently, though the genus contains many pioneer plants, rather few of them are invasive weeds of major importance. : [ Ссылка ]
